CIC2020 Announces Plans for Binghamton Innovation Galaxy

At the start of the Spring 2012 semester, CIC2020′s program coordinators challenged this year’s leadership class to design an initiative that would help drive regional economic development through strengthening university/community partnerships and supporting an entrepreneurial culture. In addition to compiling the ideas researched by the seven previous cohorts of CIC2020 students, they met each week with leaders from the local and regional government, university, and business community.

This year’s research led to the conceptualization of a BIG initiative: the Binghamton Innovation Galaxy. The initiative encompasses an intelligent networking of innovation hubs that encourages student ingenuity and enterprise, provides connections to resources, and fosters relationships between individuals and entities on campus and in the community.

The main goal is to contribute to the socioeconomic growth of our region by empowering young talent and inspring them to be innovators. What is the mission? 1. to present entrepreneurship as a viable career option and 2. to encourage members of the local community to start their own ventures here in Greater Binghamton.

This year’s leaders hope to begin implementing the recommendations by coordinating weekly events and programs to help aspiring, new, and current entrepreneurs – from concept to reality. They received an initial donation to kick off the initiative and are exploring additional options for funding the BIG programs. The final report and individual student papers will soon be posted on www.cic2020.org.

The program coordinators can be contacted by e-mailing cic2020@gmail.com or sending a message through CIC2020′s Facebook page.

CIC2020 Students Ask Local Community to Help Build Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

On Friday, May 11th, Binghamton University’s Catalysts for Intellectual Capital 2020 (CIC2020) will report on findings of their research and present their proposal for an entrepreneurship initiative that fosters student ingenuity and enterprise, establishes linkages to resources, and builds relationships with leaders of entrepreneurial efforts on campus and in the community. Referenced as Binghamton’s Innovation Galaxy, their BIG initiative aims to enhance community interactivity, student experiences, and resource connectivity through intelligent networking and innovation hubs.

For the seventh consecutive year, students from CIC2020’s leadership course will host a public presentation and reception. Over 80 leaders from local government, academia, and the business community are expected to attend. The event will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Binghamton Riverwalk Hotel & Conference Center from 2-4pm. Guests are requested to RSVP at http://cic2020presentation.eventbrite.com.

This year, faculty adviser Dr. Diane Crews was joined by alumna and local entrepreneur, Kathryn Fletcher, to compile the research done since 2006 by the seven cohorts of CIC2020 leadership students and produce a report focusing on how to drive regional economic development through strengthening university/community partnerships and supporting an entrepreneurial culture.

Fletcher believes the proposed BIG initiative is more than an effort to revitalize the local economy; it’s about empowering the next generations to think differently and inspiring them to be innovators. CIC2020 encourages students to focus on getting an education full of service learning experiences and creating meaning rather than just earning a degree to secure a job. Many of the research papers written by former CIC2020 students have discussed the impact of simple shifts in attitude and perception.

Identifying mere positive thinking as an underutilized tool, Fletcher says, “Binghamton was just recently named the fifth most depressed, second most obese, and the number one most pessimistic city in the nation. Our community should really just embrace these rankings and thank the poll administrators for giving us the opportunity to create the best underdog story of all time.”
